Filton Abbey Wood Station

Client: Great Western Railway

Project Overview

Filton Abbey Wood Station

£212,176 ex VAT

Service: Roofing

Sector: Rail

  • Approved Contractor: MLG UK Ltd
  • System Installed: Westwood specialist surfacing system
  • Client: Great Western Railway
  • Duration: Two months, working during station closed hours
  • Work Carried Out: Substrate preparation and build-up, Westwood specialist surfacing system

Scope of Work

The overbridge deck at Filton Abbey Wood had worn down so far that a waterproofing system could not simply be laid over it. The surface had to be prepared, treated and built back up before the Westwood system could go on at all, the same system MLG used at Oxford, on a structure in far worse condition.

  • Specialist Westwood surfacing system across the overbridge
  • Extensive preparation, treatment and build-up of a severely worn surface before installation
  • Sealing of the upstands and edges: the element of the work carried out in daytime hours
  • The remainder delivered at night during station closed hours
  • Completion of all items raised at inspection

Systems installed

  • Surfacing: Specialist Westwood surfacing system: same system as the Oxford Overbridge
  • Substrate treatment: Extensive preparation, treatment and build-up of a worn surface

Challenges & Constraints

01
Worn past overlaying

The deck had worn down to the point that a waterproofing system could not simply be laid over it, preparation, treatment and build-up were needed before anything could be applied.

02
No shutdown available

The bridge had to stay operational to the public every day, so there was no closure to work inside.

03
Worse than Oxford

The same Westwood system had been installed at the Oxford overbridge, but Filton was a structure in far worse condition and without Oxford’s seven-day full shutdown.

Project Execution & Techniques

Night shifts, not shutdown

The work was stretched across two months of night working during station closed hours, with the bridge handed back operational every morning.

Substrate built back up

The worn surface was prepared, treated and built back up rather than surfaced over, because coating over a deck in that condition would have failed.

Upstands sealed by day

Only the sealing of the upstands and edges was carried out in daytime hours; everything else was done when the station was closed.

Westwood system installed

The specialist Westwood surfacing system was installed across the overbridge deck once the substrate was sound enough to receive it.

Outcome & Long-Term Benefits

Open every day

The bridge stayed operational to the public throughout the two-month programme, handed back each morning.

A sound substrate

The new surfacing went onto a deck that had been prepared and built back up, rather than onto a worn one.

Inspection items closed

All items raised at inspection were completed within the package.

One spec, two methods

Filton and Oxford show the same specification delivered two ways, a seven-day shutdown at one, two months of night shifts at the other.

Conclusion

Filton Abbey Wood needed the same Westwood surfacing system MLG had installed at the Oxford overbridge, but almost nothing else about the job was the same. Oxford came with a seven-day full shutdown. At Filton the bridge carried the public every day, and the deck was in a far worse state, worn to the point that extensive preparation, treatment and build-up were needed before any system could go down.

MLG delivered it across two months of night shifts during station closed hours, sealing the upstands and edges in daytime and handing the bridge back operational every morning. The substrate was rebuilt rather than coated over, and every item raised at inspection was closed out within the £212,176 package.
